Restorative Justice in Sport Seminar
Date: Thursday 24th September
Time: 12-1pm
Venue: Online (link sent in advance of Seminar)
Sporting organisations regularly face disputes involving athletes, coaches, volunteers, officials, clubs, parents and governing bodies. Effective dispute resolution processes and constructive feedback mechanisms help maintain positive relationships, improve governance and reduce escalation of conflict.
When harm or conflict occurs within sport, the governing authority is tasked to determine blame and assign punishment. While this may be viewed as ‘justice’, research evidences that sanctions rarely have a sustainable impact on the perpetrator, injured party, their teams, clubs, communities and organisation.
Restorative Justice (RJ) redresses this imbalance – This seminar will explore practical approaches to managing disagreements, complaints and feedback within sporting environments.
Martina Jordan, trainer and practitioner has been facilitating RJ for sports organisations for over a decade.
Overview
In this seminar Martina will explore:
- What RJ is, and is not
- What the research tells us about punitive approaches to harm and wrongdoing
- What an RJ process looks like and,
- Outcomes for those who participate, using case studies.
